Love will Find a Way
Mr. Melaku is the superintendent of the Ethiopian Shipping Lines¡¯ vessel "ANDINITE". He is an old friend of our COSCO (Shanghai) Shipyard. Recently he feels more happy than he has during previous repairs because he got some urgently required medicine with some timely help from COSCO Shanghai Shipyard and he could pass hope and comfort to his old father who had unfortunately been diagnosed with prostate cancer. The whole process was full of difficulty but conveyed the essence of the COSCO Shipyard corporate culture.
In April, when Mr. Melaku was conducting a docking repair of vessel "ANDINITE", he got some very sad news: his elderly father, in Ethiopia, had been diagnosed as suffering from prostate cancer. The doctor advised that it would be better if he could be treated quickly with an anti-origin-cancer drug made in Sweden, which has a good effect on this disease and can greatly extend the life of patients.
However, the medicine is a new drug and not available in Ethiopia. Mr. Melaku was very anxious about this situation and he considered if it were possible to buy the medicine in Shanghai. But after searching some medicine shops he found that he could not explain what kind of medicine he needed and didn¡¯t know what to do. At this stage he decided to ask Mr. Pu, the Commercial Department Manager of COSCO Shanghai Shipyard, for help. Mr. Pu immediately promised we would do everything possible to help him to get the drug.
The staff of the Commercial Department acted immediately with an online search to obtain locations where the drug was sold in the East Asia area. The team found it's available in Hong Kong and there are few domestic sales and other related information. The local information and feedback was also disappointing; none of the pharmacies they asked had the drug and some of the pharmacists had never heard of the drug.
Distressing information, but we did not give up and we began implementation of plan B: a direct approach to the cancer hospital. Mr. Lin was made responsible for the matter and he went to the hospital to wait for it to open at 6 AM. After 4 hrs waiting he still got the bad news that, although it was known about, it was very expensive and the hospital was out of stock. When we nearly gave up Miss Huang had another idea; to search some anti-tumor medicine shops close to the cancer hospital. This idea gave us some hope again and we went around from house to house to find the hospital. Finally, our hard work paid off and we found a pharmacy in a small anti-tumor medicine shop who were able to help.
When the drugs were delivered to Mr. Melaku, everyone felt indescribably happy and thoughts of our days of toil and anxiety disappeared at once. Mr. Melaku's face was full of surprise, and kept expressing his gratitude, saying "Thank you! Thank you!"
